International Moving

Not only do you have to cope with the stress of moving house but also with moving abroad. With all the new changes - culture, regulations, forms, language - this can often be a daunting time, however the following information and links to various countries aims to make it a little less stressful.

The key to a stress free move abroad is planning and preparation . Planning a move abroad is very different from domestic moves, you have to be even more organised. There are many more things to consider and it will take longer than you think. It can take weeks to ship your belongings abroad so you must be organized and leave out anything that you may need for this duration. You will be able to take some of your belongings by plane with you but do check the weight restrictions on your airlines as they can differ.

If you are planing to move abroad, ask one of our representatives on how 1st Ever Ready can help you. We offer a comprehensive overseas moving service that will take care of packing, storage and shipping. You can rely on use for accurate information and expert advice on insurance, customs and much more.

Packing; When moving abroad it is recommended that you have the removals company pack up for you. You can pack yourself but 1st Ever Ready are experts in packing items for shipping and is worth its weight in gold. Check Packing Service page for more information on our professional, comprehensive service. If you do decide to pack boxes yourself they have to be labelled on the inventory as PBO (Packed By Owner) and this can make customs more likely to examine your belongings sometimes adding delays and extra costs. If you do pack yourself make sure you start and get organized 12 weeks before your move.

Declutter; Taking items you never use, to another country can be expensive in shipping costs. Dispose or sell any items you no longer use and sort out paperwork. Perfect opportunity to cancel any policies you no longer need in the UK.

Electrical goods; Check whether your electrical goods will work in the country of destination. DVD's and videos will only work in regions that they are prepared for. T.V's will work differently in Europe so check the government website for the country of your destination.

Notify: Once you have a completion date contact all relevant companies and services i.e. gas, electric, council, water, etc

Pets; If you are taking pets abroad, make sure that all vaccinations are up to date. Pet cats and dogs can travel from the UK via approved routes to a number of countries, including France, without undergoing quarantine - provided they meet the conditions of the Pet Travel Scheme.

Doctor: If you are on any medication make sure you have enough. If you need regular prescriptions then take any medical letters and a copy of your prescription with you. This will help the doctor in your new country, as medical notes can take some time to arrive by post.

E111 : If you are travelling within the European Union, be sure you get an E111 form from the post office before you travel. This will allow you to get reduced or free emergency care for a limited period.

Savings: If you have any savings it is very important to contact the bank. If your account includes the facility to make a “not ordinarily resident” declaration you can arrange for your interest to be paid without deduction of tax. Your building society or bank will be able to advice you more.

Forms ; Make sure you complete a P85 form, your current employer, accountant or tax office can do this. You may get a tax rebate if you move before the end of the finical year.

Voting; You will still be allowed to vote if you are a British National living overseas, in UK General Elections and European Union Elections for up to 15 years after the last year in which your name appeared in an electoral register. In order to register as an overseas voter you will need to contact the electoral registration covering the address for where you were last registered

Pensions : Contact the UK Pensions Service to talk through your options regarding your state pension. If you are moving to a EEA country (European Economic area you will still be entitled to receive a pension if you have made the relevant contributions.
